This section was added to keep all aware of what is new in breast
cancer reconstruction, what is new on this web site, and what interesting
events are occurring. The web site was updated based on your
comments to make it more informative and readable. The table of contents page
link was added to multiple pages. This should help
with the navigation of the site and for someone looking for a specific
piece of information.
A scientific paper that I presented at the Northeastern Society of
Plastic Surgeons entitled The Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Free
Flap for Breast Reconstruction was published in
the May 2001 issue of the Annals of Plastic Surgery. Click here for the
Press Release. For those wishing to read the
paper's abstract click here for the abstract.
If you wish to read the paper click here "The Deep Inferior Epigastric
Perforator Free Flap for Breast Reconstruction". In
January of 2003 I presented a paper on when not to do the DIEP flap.
Some patients have a dominant superficial system and in those situations
it is better to use the superficial system. This occurs about 15% of
the time.
I spoke on April 26, 2003 at the spring meeting of the New York
Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons on the DIEP and SIE flap for Breast Reconstruction.
Currently I am reviewing the effects of radiation on the DIEP flap. We
are in the process of reviewing patients who have had radiation treatment
either before or after DIEP flap breast reconstruction. Early information
seems to indicate that there has been no adverse affect on the
reconstruction.

Some of my patients have gotten together and started a new web site
called:
www.diepsisters.com This is
a very informative site and worth looking at.
Some patients have offered their email addresses for others to
correspond with for patient to patient questions.
amyhnln@aol.com
bilateral reconstruction (write to Amy)
davidfriday@vnet.net
unilateral reconstruction for Poland's syndrome (congenital under
development of the breast) please refer to either DIEP or Stephanie
in the subject line.
We are currently looking at the effects of pre and postoperative
radiation on the DIEP flap. Initial impression is that the radiation
does not adversely affect the flap.
Our support group meetings are monthly. In last few meetings we ran out of chairs. The group has volunteered
to visit patients in the hospital who have had this procedure. How
wonderful it is to have the support from a woman who has been
there.
